When it comes to culinary adventures in Europe, most travelers instantly think of pizza in Naples, fine dining in Lyon, or tapas by the beach in San Sebastián.
However, a recent study suggests that the most authentic dining experience might not be found in any of these famous food destinations.
According to research by the travel company Saga, which analyzed over 5,000 restaurants across 125 European cities using Google reviews, the words “authentic” and “traditional” appear most often in reviews about restaurants in Budapest.
The Hungarian capital has officially claimed the top spot as Europe’s most authentic food destination.
🇭🇺 Budapest – A Taste of Tradition Beyond the Obvious
Known for its ruin bars, thermal baths, and stunning views along the Danube, Budapest is now emerging as a serious player on the European gastronomy scene.
The city has recently gained several Michelin-starred restaurants, and Hungarian cuisine continues to charm with its hearty, home-cooked spirit.
Signature dishes such as the rich beef goulash with paprika, creamy chicken paprikash, and the legendary Gundel pancakes filled with walnuts and raisins soaked in rum are enough to make any foodie fall in love.
Among the city’s top recommendations are Borkonyha, a Michelin-starred restaurant offering modern Hungarian cuisine, and Rosenstein, a family-run gem preserving recipes passed down through generations.
🇬🇷 Piraeus Takes Second Place
In second place comes Piraeus, the bustling port city next to Athens – a paradise for seafood lovers. Here, tables overflow with mussels, grilled octopus, fragrant fish soup, and golden loukoumades (honey-drenched dough balls) – the same treat once served to winners of the ancient Olympic Games.
🍽 Other Cities Worth a Culinary Visit
Other destinations making it into Saga’s top 10 include Vienna, Valletta, and Prague, each offering a unique blend of tradition and taste.
Surprisingly, France and Spain missed the top three, while Italy only reached the tenth spot with Milan, according to Time Out.
